Hosts Iran rounded off a very successful tournament as they proudly topped the medal standings at the World Taekwondo President’s Cup for Asia region on Kish Island.

The home nation won eight gold and five silver across both men’s and women’s competition at the Kish Olympic Sports Complex which saw them take a total of 71 points.

Ukraine were the medal table’s runner up with 36 points after claiming four gold and two silver, while Russia came third with eight points courtesy of one gold and one bronze.

Completing the top five were Uzbekistan with one gold and India with one silver and three bronze.

The event is a World Taekwondo G2-ranked tournament and offers wild cards to the top-four-ranked senior athletes for the 2020 Asian Taekwondo Championships.

China were the biggest winners on day one, claiming a total of eight medals – made up of five golds, two silvers and one bronze. South Korea were the second-best-ranked country with three golds, three silvers and four bronzes, while hosts Iran completed the top three with two silvers and six bronzes.

Among those in attendance at the event is World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue who is joined by Asian Taekwondo Union counterpart Kyu Seok Lee and Islamic Republic of Iran Taekwondo Federation head Seyed Mohammad Pouladgar.

Iran’s Asgar Azizi was named as the tournament’s best player and he will be hoping for similar success in Manchester this May has Iran arrive for the World Taekwondo Championships.
